THOMAS EDISON WAS A GREAT THINKER
Take, for example, Thomas Edison the great inventor. A man who single-handedly patented over 8,000 inventions in his lifetime including the electric light, the telephone and the phonograph. A man who also made over 10,000 attempts to discover a filament for an incandescent light bulb that would burn for hundreds of hours.
Many other capable scientists also conducted the same experiments. But the difference between Edison and the othersĀ is what we want to investigate. The difference was Edison wouldn’t give up, despite the fact that it took him well over three years of patient determination to achieve that end.
An insight into Thomas Edison’s resolve may be gained through articles written in a Chicago newspaper in the early stages of his experiments. They declared that electric lights were unworthy of serious attention, and that in the main most should not speak of them nor waste time and money experimenting with them. That same newspaper, however, sent a reporter to Mr Edison after his great discovery to ask how it felt like to fail over 10,000 times before achieving success, to which he answered with, “I didn’t fail over 10,000 times – I just found 10,000 ways it wouldn’t work”.
Albert Einstein, often considered the greatest genius of the twentieth century, once said, “I think and think for months, sometimes for years. Ninety-nine times the conclusion is false, but the one hundredth time I am right”.
