I once wrote the following quote as a part of an article on a specific area of the selling process, and this is my direct quote from that article. “Those that move back into old tactics usually only get results from those that can identify with them – the aging population. The older the old trick – the older the prospect will need to be to appreciate the trick.”
Now the first time I shared that quote was more than thirty years ago, but more recently I used it as one of my sales quotes on social media – and the outcry that resulted from this one small quote astounded me. I was taken to task on many fronts by the readers in one particular Facebook group.
Once just one reader that was offended by the quote voiced his opinion many more followed, defending the fact that they had sold a certain way for 20 or 30 years and had no reason to change what was working. Others went on to say that their selling style worked as well on the younger generation and they had no need to seek out older prospects. Others just vented their anger. And I replied to them all and simply thanked them, in a variety of ways, for responding to my quote.
But today I still stand by those words because they are so true. We should all move forward and not backward when it comes to sales tactics and techniques. So allow me to close with that exact quote as a reminder that the professional salespeople I know never resort to outdated methods.
