EVERYTHING WILL CHANGE – EVEN TRADITIONAL SALES PROCESSES
For some reason the one thing all of us find hard to do is to be 100% honest with ourselves is that change is inevitable. And that fact seems to remain the same whether we have just started in sales or are a veteran seller with decades of experience.
This is even more pronounced when it comes to mastering social media skills. My friend Noel Walsh, a highly regarded sales trainer in the USA automotive industry, says that, “He notices that relatively new car salespeople who understand social media, build a large database with relative ease and begin to sell reasonably well within a short space of time.”
On the other hand, many longer time, but older salespeople who have had great numbers in the past are finding it difficult to come to terms getting on top of this new way of selling. In fact, prospects do not shop around the way they used to and the new average is that today’s client uses social media and makes just 1.6 face to face calls before they purchase.
The cold hard fact’s are that many of the older generation of sellers have possibly been hiding behind beliefs like:
• “I’m too old to start over.”
• “I’m too busy to learn those new things.”
• “I’m not smart/talented/lucky enough to get what I really want any more.”
If you have even come close to uttering any of the above, or have thought about this more than once, there’s something important you need to appreciate. That all of these beliefs are simply illusions.
Why? Because no matter where you come from or where you’re at right now – you have the power to transform your beliefs, your sales, and in turn, your life. And this “mind over matter” process is exactly what many of my past friend, trainers, motivators and seminar presenters have suggested is an untapped and somewhat prematurely wasted human potential.

So, if you feel stuck, stressed, frustrated or undeserving, and you think some of that negativity you need to embrace and take time to learn some new tricks – even if you have to pay to be tutored in them.
The one thing that is constant in life is that things change, and each one of us has to realise that change is not only inevitable, but if you do not adapt and change, chances are you will be left behind. But it’s not just change for change sake these days. Change is more rapid and harder to keep abreast of if you don’t work with change.
It has often been said that there has been more change in the past 50 years than the preceding 5,000 years, but the change we have experienced over the past 10 years eclipses all of this.
My late friend Brian Price had a favourite saying that embodied this one ideology. He said, “If you’re ripe you rot, and if you’re green you grow.” So embrace the green (no matter you age or experience) and grow in your chosen profession – before you get completely overtaken by the young generation.
Another thing Noel shares is that, “You must own your own environment. Really? Yes is because you own your attitude.” Thank you Noel for providing me with the ammunition to write this article to other fossils just like me, hopefully many of which are prepared to learn new stuff as needed.
The best part is that I’m glad I can write articles like this – even after 53 years in sales.
